Installation tips

  • Wrap the trench in filter fabric before placing drain rock — this is the single biggest failure mode of French drains.
  • Backfill a minimum 4" below and 4" above perforated pipe.
  • Slope perforated pipe 1% (1/8" per foot) minimum toward daylight.

Ordering tips

  • Buy the size that matches your pipe perforations — 3/4" for standard perf pipe.
  • A 100 ft x 12" wide x 12" deep trench needs ~3.7 yd of drain rock.

Common mistakes

  • Using unwashed base rock as drain rock — fines clog the system.
  • Skipping filter fabric — soil migrates in and the drain fails within a few seasons.

Frequently asked

What size drain rock for a French drain?
3/4" is standard for residential French drains. Larger sizes are used for higher-flow civil work.
Is drain rock the same as pea gravel?
No. Drain rock is washed and sized specifically for drainage; pea gravel is round decorative stone that packs too tight for high-flow drainage.
How many tons of drain rock do I need?
About 1.35 tons per cubic yard. For a 40 ft trench at 12"x12" you'll need ~1.5 yards / 2 tons.
