Why this behavior applies: Concrete is a rigid, formed material. The only real adjustment is placement contingency — form deflection, small over-excavation, and pump / bucket loss.

  • Sub-base flatness — A ½-in low spot across 100 sq ft is about ⅙ cu yd of extra concrete.
  • Form deflection — Poorly braced forms bulge under load and drink additional yardage.
  • Whether the pour is pumped — Pump primer and line loss add up to about ¼ cu yd.
  • Verify thickened edges and over-excavation — a 4-inch slab with a 6-inch perimeter thickens the order.
  • Confirm reinforcement (mesh, fiber, or rebar) before scheduling the pour.
  • Have finishing crew and tools on-site before the truck arrives — pour times are unforgiving.
  • Forgetting thickened perimeter edges when computing volume.
  • Ignoring waste and ordering exactly the calculated volume.
  • Skipping isolation and control joints on larger slabs.

How it's calculated

Area is derived from your shape inputs and converted to sq ft.

Depth is converted to feet; cubic feet = area × depth.

Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27, then × (1 + waste %) × (1 + compaction %).

Estimated tons = cubic yards (with waste) × 2.

Truckloads = cubic yards (with waste) ÷ truck capacity.

Total cost = cubic yards (with waste) × price per cubic yard + delivery.
