How to Calculate Cubic Yards

A cubic yard is the standard unit for bulk material. Here's the formula and a worked example.

The formula

Cubic yards = (length × width × depth) ÷ 27, when every dimension is in feet.

There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard (3 × 3 × 3).

Example

A 1,000 sq ft bed at 3 inches of mulch: depth in feet = 3 / 12 = 0.25.

Cubic feet = 1,000 × 0.25 = 250. Cubic yards = 250 / 27 ≈ 9.26.

Add 10% waste and round up to about 10.2 cubic yards.

Common mistakes

Forgetting to convert depth from inches to feet.

Ordering without a waste factor for irregular beds.

Confusing cubic yards with tons — tons depend on material density.
