Paver Patio Guide
The base is the patio. Nail the base and the pavers behave for decades.
A dry-laid paver patio is a wearing course over an engineered base. The pavers are the visible layer, but the base is what carries the load.
Base thickness by use
| Use | Aggregate base | Bedding sand |
|---|---|---|
| Pedestrian patio | 4"–6" | 1" |
| Driveway | 8"–12" | 1" |
Pro tip
Sweep polymeric sand into every joint at the very end and activate with a fine mist — this is what locks the pavers.
