Drain Rock Guide

The complete guide to washed drain rock — sizes, where to use it, and how to size a load.

Drain rock is any washed aggregate — usually 3/4 inch — used to move water through a drainage system. It's the workhorse behind every French drain, dry well, and behind-wall drainage detail.

Sizes at a glance

SizeWhere it goes
3/8"Bedding for utilities, permeable pavers.
3/4"The residential drainage standard.
1"–1.5"High-flow systems, civil projects.
Warning
If the rock isn't washed, it will silt up its own drainage. Always specify washed.
