Drain Rock Guide
The complete guide to washed drain rock — sizes, where to use it, and how to size a load.
Drain rock is any washed aggregate — usually 3/4 inch — used to move water through a drainage system. It's the workhorse behind every French drain, dry well, and behind-wall drainage detail.
Sizes at a glance
| Size | Where it goes |
|---|---|
| 3/8" | Bedding for utilities, permeable pavers. |
| 3/4" | The residential drainage standard. |
| 1"–1.5" | High-flow systems, civil projects. |
Warning
If the rock isn't washed, it will silt up its own drainage. Always specify washed.
