How Many Tons of Gravel Do I Need?
A 500 sq ft driveway at 4" needs ~6.2 yards / 8.7 tons of 3/4" crushed rock.
The formula
Cubic yards = (length × width × depth in feet) ÷ 27.
Tons = cubic yards × density. Most crushed rock is ~1.4 tons per cubic yard.
Example
500 sq ft × 4" depth (0.333 ft) = 166.5 cu ft = 6.17 yd = ~8.65 tons.
