How Deep Should Mulch Be?
2–3 inches for annual beds, 3–4 inches around trees. Deeper mulch can smother roots.
Recommended depths
Annual and perennial beds: 2–3 inches.
Trees and shrubs: 3–4 inches, kept off the trunk.
Weed suppression: minimum 3 inches.
Too thin or too thick
Under 2 inches doesn't hold moisture or block weeds.
Over 4 inches suffocates roots and encourages pests.
